“Open Government Partnership“, a New Multilateral Initiative Launched

A high profile international meeting was held in Washington DC on July 12th, during which a new multilateral initiative titled “Open Government Partnership” was launched. The meeting was held at the State Department and was hosted by the Secretary of State Ms Hillary Rodham Clinton and the Brazilian foreign minister, Mr. Antonio Patriota. Representatives of state institutions and civil society organisations form over 60 countries were present, among which also Croatia.

The purpose of the initiative is to ensure concrete progress in the field of transparency and openness of governments, inclusion and empowerment of citizens and civil society, fight against corruption and application of new technologies in improving the quality of services provided to the citizens by public administration.
By invitation of the U.S. Government, Igor Vidačak, the Head of the Government Office for Cooperation with NGOs, also attended the meeting.

The “Open Government Partnership” will be formally inaugurated in September 2011 at the margins of the UN General Assembly, when eight states, members of the managing board of the initiative will sign the Declaration on Open Government and announce action plans for their respective countries. All other countries are invited to join the initiative and present their action plans till the next meeting announced for March 2012.
